Auditory Acuity

Hearing Acuity & Audiometry

  1. Overview of test

・The hearing test uses an audiometer to test the ability to hear at a low frequency (1,000 Hz) sound and high frequency (4,000 Hz) sound. For 1,000 Hz, the ability to hear the sound volume at 30 dB is tested. For 4,000 Hz, the ability to hear sound volume at 25 ~ 40 dB (the value varies depending on the type of  checkup) is tested.

・Sound is transmitted from the outer ear to the middle ear. Sensory cells in the inner ear are stimulated, and signals are transmitted to the brain via the auditory nerve. However, if there is any obstacle in this process, the ability to hear becomes degraded.

  1. If abnormalities are detected by the hearing test

・The cause of abnormality cannot be determined by the test. We recommend that you visit an ear, nose and throat doctor to examine the cause.
・The Hongo Health Service Center has an ENT department. If the result of the hearing test is abnormal, check the Health Service Center’s website for the ENT Department’s hours and get a medical exam. However, because the exam provided by the Heath Service Center is limited, we may refer you to a hospital if necessary.
